Learning to fly signals a transformation in my practice, as the collaging of heterogeneous material expands even further to incorporate previous bodies of work. In its first incarnation presented at MENSCH, TANZ!at Halle 15, Leipzig, works produced across a decade [To Be Continued … (2022), Handbook of the Spontaneous Other (2020) and Falling Tight (2014)] come together as a new photographic installation. Learning to Fly literally brings together into a new mesmerising dance, diverse artworks in which women’s movement forms an expression of female and visual pleasure. Individual and collective bodies meeting animals, ancient artefacts, rockets, planes and landscapes are transformed into images that dance across the walls, changing textures, scales and materialities. No longer fixed as specific series, images are continually recomposed into new relations, challenging dominant ideas around the uniqueness and singularity of the art object.
