House of (Un)Commons is a short collage film. It was developed via workshops with a number of diasporic communities, which were focused on recollections of childhood and especially memories of childhood spaces of refuge. The film weaves together diverse descriptions of childhood homes, of their architecture and of specific ways of life. Following an associative collage editing, the narrative voice-over is set against film clips depicting western museum spaces, segments from colonial and orientalist films, alongside snippets of contemporary life in the North East of England. House of (Un)Commons constructs out of multiple perspectives a new space of belonging, while producing a sense of continuing with the past, through the interweaving of a diversity of experiences. The film was poised as a personal reaction to Brexit.
